Phat Flyers

“Dude and Sweet” - the Currie Phat Flyers

Currie scooters were among the first to be widely popular and the 2001 Flyer was so ubiquitous that it earned the title of the “Model-T” of scooters.  They used common bicycle parts and had a torquey brushless motor. The weak points were poor deck hardware and a flimsy steering tube.  They used a 12V 10 Ah battery in a proprietary size that is still expensive and uncommon to find and replace.  But they went 15 MPH and could climb hills like crazy.  Many early scooter nuts like myself logged hundreds of miles on these sturdy horses.

I ordered both of these scoots at the same time from powerassist.com during the great 2001 Flyer-fire sale for $175 each. Both had very different personalities. With names inspired by the movie “Dude, Where’s My Car”, Sweet was smooth, powerful and quiet, so I put Kenda road tires on it. Dude’s motor and chain growled a little louder for some reason, and the Specialized Spanky knobby tires were a perfect match for it’s personality.  Two other friends got the red ones too, and I’d swear they are a lot more like Dude. Sweet! They have since gone to new owners, but will run forever if properly maintained.

Don’t those red sidewalls look nice on Dude’s Spanky BMX tires?

Notice the after-market Bell brake pads.  They are “gimbaled” so you can precisely control the angle they attack the rim.

The Kenda road tires are a better match for Sweet’s smooth demeanor.
