How to prepare a 2001 Flyer for use... this is for people who ever bought a bike or scooter and had to unpack and assemble it. (note: mostly humorous)
- Inspect the box for damage. If you find any, it's a good sign (never search store shelves for the pristene box - it always contains a defective product).
- Carefully rip open the box. Look inside and have a good cry.
- Lift the Flyer and it's handlebar assembly out of the box. Notice how the handlebar post has been bouncing on the deck and leaving little marks.
- Remove broken reflector(s) from the box and discard.
- Remove deck hardware. After stripping the heads of most of the screws, drill out the rest, discard and go buy some decent screws, washers and locknuts.
- Remove factory tires. Discard. Gently tighten all spokes, put a new strip of rim tape on. Put a set of tuffy tire liners inside a set of decent tires, and remount to rim. Cry when you realize:
- You mounted the directional tires on backwards
- You forgot to note the assembly order for the rear wheel and drive hardware
- Replace all the electrical connections that fell off 10 minutes after the scooter was thrown together in Thailand (can you say "Thai Stick for lunch"?)
- Insert handlebar into steering post. Over-tighten, under-tighten, it doesn't matter. Keep at it until it seems safe to ride.
- Remove the remains of the shattered reflectors and put some nice high brightness flashing lamps on front and rear.
- Plug in the 1 AMP over-charger that it came with and charge for three weeks. Order a new set of batteries and a decent charger as soon as possible.
- Even after all that, you realize it's a total blast!
