The Eclipse is a belt-driven scooter. As such, it was extremely quiet. It came with 8" pneumatic tires, but I replaced the rear tire with a urethane-filled solid tire which eliminated the possibility of flats on the drive wheel. It has a rear-mounted "band" brake, which was quite adequate.
This was my first electric scooter! This model is called the "Eclipse", and Costco sold these at Christmas 2000 for $350.00. Electric scooters vary in utility from "toy" to practical transportation. The difference is primarily in top speed and hill climbing ability. This one did about 12MPH, and climbed moderate hills, depending on rider weight. The chassis would accommodate a 225lb rider, but a 170lb or less rider would enjoy better acceleration. It folded flat and fit nicely in my car trunk. The Eclispe was one of the first “Zappy Clones” and was also sold as the Sporty 24.
The Eclipse had a 200 watt motor, two 12V batteries, and a single-speed controller.
Another nice feature of the Eclipse is it's large aluminum deck. Plenty of room for two adult feet. This is a "surfer" style scooter with nice tall adjustable handlebars.
I learned how to modify stock scooters by practicing on this one. To read the story of my project, click here.
